THE NEW YANKEE STADIUM PT. 2

Since I'm into doing stadium reviews, I have to put my two cents in on the house next to the house that Ruth built.

I agree with everything Wyatt mentioned. It is clean and friendly. The seats are more spacious and the sightlines are great even from the second to last row in the nosebleeds (all the other seats were $3,000). It is very similar to the old place in feel and layout. I approve.

If the terrible people sitting in front of us are any indication, the new Yankee Stadium will quickly lose it's shininess. The guy was spitting sunflower seed shells in every direction but the one towards his empty beer cup. I don't blame the people sitting next to him for wearing gas masks and plastic ponchos. You can never be too careful about swine flu. (Why didn't I take a picture of these people, you ask? Argh... At the time, I didn't want to be an obnoxious asshole. Regrettable. An ounce of obnoxiousness is worth a pound of good blogging. Oh well. Lesson learned.)

GAME DAY!

Last night Allie and I went to our first game of the 2009 baseball season. As expected, our mere presence helped lead the Yankees to victory! You're welcome, Yankees.

Here are some first reactions to the NEW Yankees stadium:

-Stadium Staff...very friendly (and not in an annoying or patronizing way)
-ATMs!
-Beer Prices are up $2 on average (BOOOOO!)
-On a clear day, the outfield is blinded by the sun
-On a windy day, balls are being gusted to home-run status
-Urinals are uncomfortably close to one another (I was shoulder to shoulder with my peeing brethren, a little familiar for my taste)

All-in-all a successful outing. In time, I'm sure we can expect to see that patina of grime we've come to welcome at our new stadium as well.

MEMORIAL DAY!

Yesterday, Memorial Day, I drove down to Baltimore to see the Orioles/Yankees game at Camden Yards. I have many things to say about this but first of all - there was NO traffic! I guess people really were staying home because of gas prices. I heard Pat Kiernan saying that less people would be on the road but I didn't believe it. He says a lot of things. This time, though, it was true. I hit no traffic there and back. I also paid $3.72 a gallon which, considering, I thought was pretty good.

Camden Yards is the 3rd major league ballpark that I have visited and the 2nd at which I have attended a game. I took a tour of the Blue Jays stadium in Toronto back in high school, the highlight of which was watching roadies set up for the Rolling Stones show that was going on that weekend. I won't tell you which tour it was because then I'd be dating myself. Ok fine, Steel Wheels.

The Orioles' stadium has it's plusses and minuses.
Plusses:
- It is modern, clean and well layed out. I did find myself missing the old n' dirtiness of Yankee Stadium, though. The environment just seemed a bit sterile.
- It's not nearly as big as Yankee Stadium so all the seats are pretty good.

Minuses:
- They don't have it together where refreshments are concerned. Getting a hot dog was an impossible dream. There was, maybe, one hot dog guy going around the WHOLE stadium. He showed up in my section in the 8th inning. No joke. When I went out to the concession stands I waited in a line only to get to the front and hear the grill guy say that there was a 15 minute wait for hot dogs. He was lucky he was in Baltimore at that moment. That would not fly in El Bronx. Anyway, I missed a whole inning on my hot dog quest. Not that it mattered in that game.
- Also under the refreshments umbrella - The vendor handed me my Cracker Jacks. At Yankee Stadium, even if the vendor is in the next row he will throw you the Cracker Jacks (or peanuts) because it's part of the fun. Getting handed Cracker Jacks is boring.
- Related: They didn't play Take Me Out to the Ballgame in the 7th inning stretch. What???
- Baltimore fans HATE Derek Jeter. They chanted "Overrated" everytime he went up to bat. How can you hate this guy?


I mean, seriously.

Despite the above ranting and the Yankees' loss, I am so happy to have experienced a different stadium. It was a fabulous day to be at a ballpark and I had the best time because so many awesome friends were there. I'm glad that the Orioles won because it made them happy!

FIRST GAME OF THE YEAR!

Tomorrow night I'm taking Wyatt to his first Yankee's game. It will be my pleasure to give him a tour of the house that Ruth built. Unfortunately, though, we won't be able to get there early enough to see Monument Park because I will be working until 6pm and it closes at 6:20. This work thing is constantly getting in the way of my fun. I might have to become a rockstar instead. In the meantime, I'll be sitting in the nosebleeds wearing my Posada t-shirt and wishing he wasn't on the DL.

THE YANKEES

My bandmates are going to kill me. First I post about nothing other than American Idol and now it's baseball season. But, I can't be stopped. Perhaps I should disassociate this blog from Bel Air.

Anyhooz, the Yanks played Boston last night and won. Decisively. It's hard to watch Boston games, though, because I get so mad at Manny. My blood pressure rises to an unhealthy level. He is so vile. Alex Rodriguez balances it all out, though. He is a specimen of physical perfection - juiced or not. But, that's not why I watch baseball. I mean I could talk about how beautiful the Yankee organization is all day. I could mention something about Girardi's bone structure or how Posada looks so dignified with the salt and pepper at the temples that he has going on now. But, again, that's not why I watch baseball.

Today was supposed to be the last opening day game ever to occur at Yankee Stadium but the game was rained out and will take place on Tuesday, April 1st. Go Yanks!
